Embedded Expertise

A Daughter’s Guide to Engineering

Recently, my 16-year-old daughter came to me with this question: “Dad, do you think I could be an embedded systems engineer like you?” I was thrilled by her interest.

This is what I shared with her.

My dear Lili,

I’m so happy you’re considering a career in embedded systems. It’s a world full of endless possibilities that has brought me immense satisfaction. Remember that time we transformed our chicken coop into a high-tech haven? That was just a taste of the excitement this field holds. But keep in mind, professional projects are a different beast altogether. They demand precision, timeliness, and unwavering focus.

I know that you are an artist with a science twist. Incidentally I often view embedded systems are a fascinating blend of art and science. You could find yourself lost in the intricate dance of electronics, crafting the software soul of a machine, or understanding the mechanical heart that makes it all work. It’s a world where creativity meets technical brilliance. And it’s not just about tinkering. You could be at the helm of a team, steering a project from concept to reality, or even becoming the visionary behind a product that changes lives. Whether you prefer the bustling energy of a large company or the freedom of a startup, there’s a place for you.

This journey won’t be without its challenges. Complex problems, tight deadlines, and unexpected twists are all part of the adventure. But the reward of seeing your ideas come to life is truly incomparable. And remember, while the field has historically been dominated by men, the tech world is undergoing a much-needed transformation. We desperately need more brilliant women like you to bring fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and a unique energy to this field. Your presence is not just welcomed, it’s essential.

To prepare for this exciting path, a strong foundation in science is crucial. Mathematics, physics, and computer science will be your faithful companions. Work hard on these topics, but don’t limit yourself. A well-rounded education is like a versatile toolbelt, equipping you for any challenge. And remember, it’s not just about technical skills. The ability to communicate, lead, and solve problems creatively are just as vital.

Besides education, keep that spark of curiosity alive. Explore, experiment, tinker, and hack. These are the skills that will truly set you apart. Don’t be afraid to dive into projects on your own. This independence will foster problem-solving abilities and a fearless approach to challenges.

This world is constantly evolving, so keep your curiosity alive and your mind open. Explore different areas within the field, find mentors, and build a strong support network. There are incredible women making waves in this industry, and they can be your guiding stars.

If you choose to embark on this path, know that your older brother and I will be cheering you on every step of the way. It’s a journey filled with promise, and I have no doubt you’ll shine.

But don’t let my own career path blind you. Should you ultimately choose to explore a completely different path, rest assured that I’ll be your biggest supporter. Your happiness and fulfillment are my top priorities, and I’ll be there to guide you, encourage you, and celebrate your achievements, whatever they may be.

With all my support and love,

T-
